Which Witch is which?
“What kind of Witch are you?” someone recently asked me.
“Uhh…” I struggled to formulate a reply. Was I a Kitchen Witch? A Green Witch? A Fire or a Hedge or even a Sea Witch? Maybe just a Baby Witch still finding her feet? Or perhaps a bit of everything, depending on the day.
When I started on my path of witchcraft, I had no idea there were so many different kinds of Witch. As I dove into every book I could lay my hands on, a whole world opened up before my eyes.
And of course, I was tempted to categorise myself. To pigeonhole my path neatly into a box with a label that fit me. To be able to say “I am THIS kind of Witch.”
But the truth is I’ve never been good at committing to any one thing. Variety is most definitely the spice of my life, and my witchcraft practice is no exception. One day I might be channeling my inner Green Witch, the next my inner Sea Witch. And you, too, can choose what type of Witch you want to be depending on your mood or the day — you don’t need anyone’s permission to decide and claim who you want to be. That’s the beauty of being a Witch.
However, knowing the different types of Witches that exist can be a useful way to guide your practice. I like to think of them as archetypes — aspects of your Witchy self that take turns in sharing the limelight. And if a specific path calls to you more than others, it’s a sign that it could be worth further exploration.
With that in mind, I created this short guide to introduce you to seven Witch archetypes and help you connect with the different aspects of your inner Witch. This is by no means an exhaustive list so feel free to explore further.
1. Baby Witch
The Baby Witch has the excitement and enthusiasm of the beginner’s mind. She’s like The Fool card in a tarot deck — enthusiastic and excited at the possibility of this new adventure.
A Baby Witch is usually found with her nose in a book, or feeling slightly overwhelmed surrounded by ingredients and empty jars as she tries to put together a spell.
She might be learning to read her first Tarot deck or shopping for items on her long Witchy shopping list.

2. Green Witch
The Green Witch works mainly with plant magic and medicine. Her home is full of hanging herbs and essential oils.
She loves gardening and foraging and has an impressive knowledge of the magical and healing properties of plants. The Green Witch feels a strong connection to nature, plants, and animals.
The Green Witch has herbal remedies for everything and her herbal tea game is strong.

3. Kitchen Witch
You’ll find the Kitchen Witch cooking up a storm as she infuses her fantastic food creations with intentions and spells.
The Kitchen Witch knows that cooking is magickal and uses the healing power of food to care for her loved ones. She creates beautiful, sumptuous food-based rituals and provides the snacks at group ceremonies.
4. Celestial Witch
The Celestial Witch makes her magick by blending witchcraft with astrology.
She always knows the current Moon phase, what the planets are up to, and when the next Mercury Retrograde is.
She’ll draw up your birth chart within minutes of meeting you and loves working with the Moon to supercharge her magickal efforts.
5. Sea Witch
The Sea Witch feels a strong connection to the sea/ocean. She collects shells, sand, and seawater to use in spellwork.
She loves water magic such as bath rituals, Moon water spells, and outdoor ceremonies in living water.
The Sea Witch secretly wishes she was a mermaid and loves falling asleep to ocean sounds.

6. Hedge Witch
The Hedge Witch is usually a solitary dedicated to the study of herbalism and the natural world. Like the Green and Kitchen Witches, her practice is focused on hearth and home.
But there’s more to Hedge Witchery than the physical plane. The term Hedge Witch may have originated from the practice of “hedge riding” — using meditation to enter altered states of consciousness and travel to other worlds through astral projection.
One theory goes that the Hedge Witch is the origin of the myth of flying Witches.
7. Eclectic Witch
The Eclectic Witch is the rebel of the witchcraft world. She doesn’t need rules or rigid ceremonies to work her magick — she knows all she really needs is already inside her.
She’s the Everyday Witch, weaving magick into her day-to-day, without worrying too much if she doesn’t have all the right ingredients for a spell.
She knows it’s okay that her path ebbs and flows, sometimes she has time to dedicate to it, and sometimes she doesn’t. She knows the most important thing is to flow with her intuition.
