Scorpio New Moon Solar Eclipse energy update — descending to ascend
Like Inanna, we must plunge into the underworld before we can arise anew, reborn.
Hey Witches,
Spooky season is almost upon us! On the 23rd of October, the Sun and Venus will enter Scorpio, followed closely by the Scorpio New Moon Eclipse on the 25th.
I’ve always found it fascinating that so many cultures around the world seem to celebrate this time of year by connecting with the spirits of those who’ve passed on.
It got me wondering whether the veil naturally thins at this time due to the death of the old as summer ends in the northern hemisphere or whether we manifest it through our collective intention to connect with our spooky side.
Either way, it doesn’t seem to matter. Magic is most definitely afoot as we make our way towards Scorpio season and Samhain; the ancestors approach us with outstretched hands, beckoning to those who hear their call.
This time of year is now connected to death in a very visceral way for me since my mum died a year ago last Sunday. It seems fitting that the season of my grief began during the season of death. In spite of this, like every good Witch, I love Samhain and Scorpio season.
I also love Scorpio season because I love, well, Scorpios. The Scorpios in my life are some of the most enigmatic, charismatic people I know. I secretly kinda wish I was one of them. There’s something about the whole sex-and-death vibe that really appeals to my dark side.
The Scorpio New Moon Solar Eclipse on the 25th of the month will give us a proverbial slap in the face and show us the truths we’ve been avoiding. So let’s see what it has in store for us.
Scorpio New Moon energy update
The New Moon in Scorpio comes at the end of an intense month and opens the Eclipse portal on the Scorpio-Taurus axis. Scorpio is the sign of sex, death, rebirth, and transformation. It’s also the sign of secrets, toxicity, addiction, and power. Taurus rules the material world, including our finances and food, so we can expect more shocks and revelations in those areas.
This time of year invites us to descend to the depths, like Inanna, shedding our egos and masks and coming face-to-face with our deepest pains, fears, and shame. We must plunge into the underworld, lose everything, and bow before Ereshkigal, the Queen of Hell, before we can arise anew, reborn. For birth always follows death.
Eclipses come to shake things up. They often bring sudden, unexpected, and permanent changes. A Solar Eclipse in watery Scorpio is always a dramatic event that is likely to purge the darker sides of ourselves, the secrets we’ve been hiding, and the ugly truths we would rather not face.
Mercury and Pluto have now both stationed direct, bringing more clarity to our minds and helping us move forward as we release old patterns, structures, beliefs, and systems that no longer support us. Pluto — the planetary ruler of Scorpio — going direct will expose the toxic, corrupt, and false structures holding up our current systems.
With the Sun and Venus both in Scorpio, we are being invited to dive deeper into the depths of our unprocessed emotions, grief, and trauma and look straight at the things we’d rather not see. Venus in this sign invites us to go deeper into our relationships, to connect on deeper levels, and witness the transformation and healing that are available when we see ourselves reflected in the other.
Scorpio is represented by the phoenix. The invitation of this New Moon is to rise from the ashes of our former selves transformed, but only if we can face our deepest, darkest pains, fears, and insecurities. We must succumb to the transformative power of fire and let ourselves be destroyed by it in order to step into the next version of ourselves.
But most of the time, we try to avoid such painful processes. We numb our pain with social media scrolling, shopping, alcohol, Netflix, drugs…anything, literally anything, that will keep our pain relegated to the furthest reaches of our minds.
Under the Scorpio New Moon Eclipse, we are the caterpillar in the chrysalis. To undergo radical transformation and become a beautiful butterfly, the caterpillar must literally dissolve its body and turn into goo. It doesn’t know what’s waiting for it on the other side — a beautiful, bright body, the ability to fly, and a long, straw-like tongue for drinking life’s sweet nectar — it just surrenders to the process, knowing that struggling against it would only be worse.
You may feel energetically depleted under this New Moon — if so, ask yourself if you’re setting and protecting healthy boundaries. It can be hard to say no to people, but when we’re honest about what we can give and what we can’t, it’s better for everyone involved.
Boundaries prevent resentment from breeding. You can’t give what you don’t have, so set aside time around this New Moon to replenish and recharge in whatever way feels most nourishing to you. Learn the power of saying “No.”
Don’t forget to honour your boundaries with yourself, too. We build self-trust and confidence by honouring the commitments we keep to ourselves.
To dive deeper into how the Scorpio New Moon will affect you, look to where Scorpio falls in your chart. For example, in my chart, Scorpio is in the fourth house of home and family, which has been one of the most challenging aspects of my life and where I’ve had to do some of the deepest healing.
Scorpio New Moon ritual — connecting with the ancestors
This ritual can be performed alone or as a group.
You will need:
Black or white candles or tea lights
Photos of loved ones who have passed on (optional)
Offering (fruit, sweets, flowers, or your dead loved one’s favourite food or drink)
Prepare for your ritual by preparing your space. Cleanse it energetically using herbal smoke, sound (such as a bell or singing bowl), incense, or any other method you use. Set up your ritual space in your preferred way, for example, by creating an altar with candles and photos of your ancestors.
Command any negative entities to leave and invite only beings of the highest truth, compassion, light, and love to enter your space. Call on any angels, deities, or other beings you work with to be present.
Protect your space by casting a circle, or simply imagine a protective bubble of light surrounding you and your space. This is a powerful ritual, and you don’t want any uninvited guests, so don’t skip this step!
When the space is ready, ground and centre yourself using your preferred method. If you don’t know how to ground and centre, simply draw your awareness into the present moment by taking deep, conscious breaths and imagine roots growing out of the soles of your feet and reaching deep into the Earth.
When you feel ready, invite your deceased loved ones to join you. If you’re alone, light a candle for each loved one you wish to connect with and spend some time talking to your loved one(s), telling them anything you want to say to them. In a group, take turns lighting candles and telling the group something about the person you’re lighting them for.
Once everyone has taken their turn or you’ve finished talking, return to silent meditation. Picture the loved one(s) you want to connect with. See them in your mind, and imagine yourself talking to them. Ask them for guidance about a situation or challenge in your life and wait for their answer. They may speak to you, or you might see an image or colour or feel a physical sensation. If you don’t get anything, don’t worry — the answer may come to you in a dream or become apparent soon.
Take a few more moments to connect with your loved one(s), thanking them for their presence and guidance. When you’re ready, open your eyes. Take your offering and place it in front of the photo(s) as a sign of gratitude. Leave it there overnight and either eat/drink it yourself in the morning or return it to the Earth as an offering the next day.
Spend some time journaling about your experience and share with the group if you feel called to do so.
