Leo New Moon energy update
The Leo New Moon asks us to have the courage to open our hearts, to resist the urge to shrink and contract to protect ourselves in the face of adversity.
Hey Witches,
Welcome to Leo season! The Sun officially marches into Leo today, which means it’s time to live loud and proud, embrace your passions, and unleash your inner artist. Leo season ushers in a lighter, more playful energy after the cry-fest that was Cancer season.
Now that we’ve got it all out of our system, it’s time to lighten the mood and let our hair down a little. But with some pretty savage astrology still ruling the cosmos, it may not be all fun and games.
Let’s take a look at what the Leo New Moon on the 28th of July may have in store for us.
Leo New Moon energy update
Things have been a little intense this month (to put it mildly), and they’re going to come to a head on the 31st of July when Mars, Uranus, and the North Node of the Moon form a rare triple conjunction in Taurus. Uranus is the planet of disruption, and Mars is the planet of war and chaos. The North Node represents our destiny or karma to be carried out in this lifetime. Taurus rules all things Earthly and material, so those food shortages we’ve been warned about may be ushered in by this rare alignment. Although it’s hard to say exactly what will happen, we can expect (even more) chaos at a planetary level.
But before that, on the 28th, we have the Leo New Moon gifting us a sweeter, more playful energy that reminds us not to take life too seriously. The Leo New Moon is all about connecting with your inner child and playful self-expression and creativity.
The Moon will be forming a trine with Jupiter, the planet of luck, expansion, and abundance, making this a supportive time for any creative projects. While the Capricorn Full Moon illuminated the structures and steps we need to take disciplined action towards our goals, the Leo New Moon invites us to find the joy along the way.
Retrograde season is also in full swing as the outer planets begin to make their annual reverse moves. This is a time for us to slow down and reflect. On the 19th, asteroid Chiron joined Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto in retrograde.
Chiron is known as the wounded healer. In Greek mythology, Chiron was a centaur who was abandoned at birth. He was able to transform his abandonment wound into his power and strength, using these painful lessons to help others. Chiron’s Egyptian counterpart was Anubis, guardian of the underworld. Like Chiron, Anubis was abandoned at birth, and his agonising upbringing gave him the compassion and wisdom to accompany souls as they transitioned from one world to the next.
So when Chiron/Anubis goes retrograde, the invitation is to turn our focus inward, to become our own healer and tend to our wounds so that we can find the strength, blessings, lessons, and gifts and use them to help others. Coupled with the Leo New Moon, this could be a great time for inner child work. If you need help with this, reach out to me — I’m trained in inner child healing and would love to support you.
It can be easy to feel powerless with all that’s going on in the world. We can get so caught up in the fear that we forget we are powerful cosmic co-creators. Perhaps fear is making you give away your power in certain areas of your life. Now is the time to reclaim it.
Often, we give away our power by failing to set boundaries. These might be internal or external. When we don’t respect our internal boundaries — for example, not holding ourselves accountable for working towards our goals or not prioritising self-care and rest — we send a message to ourselves that we are not worthy. This is one of the ways we give away our power.
Or perhaps you’re not holding your external boundaries. You may be accepting additional responsibilities at work or in your family that you lack the capacity for, accepting treatment that you find unacceptable, or saying yes when you mean no. If any of those sounds familiar, it’s time to revisit your boundaries.
The Leo New Moon — represented by the lion — also reminds us of the immense strength, courage, and power that lie within each of us. The word courage comes from the Latin root meaning heart, and Leo rules the heart, chest, and spine — the seat of both our physical and emotional strength. The Leo New Moon asks us to have the courage to open our hearts, to resist the urge to shrink and contract to protect ourselves in the face of adversity.
If we do, we will see our visions and dreams manifest quickly. For it takes immense strength and courage to open our hearts at a time like this. But doing so connects us with the energy of our hearts, the seat of our innate truth. By tuning into this energy, instead of getting caught up in fear-based thoughts, we connect to our internal compass that will show us our true north.
Finally, Leo energy reminds us that rest is just as important as work and play. Lions sleep for up to 20 hours per day in order to be on top form when it’s time to hunt. If you’ve been pushing yourself too hard recently, this is your friendly reminder to hit pause — you’ll probably find it increases your creativity and productivity.
Card of the week
Every other week, I pull a card to provide guidance for subscribers of The Coven.
This week, I’m using my “Seasons of the Witch: Beltane” deck, and the card I’ve pulled for you is Growth.
This card is reminding you that no matter what challenges you’re facing right now, they’re helping to shape the future you. Sometimes things happen in life, and we don’t get what we want — perhaps a relationship ends, or a job opportunity doesn’t work out. At the time, this can feel devastating. But so often, we look back later and realise that what felt world-ending at the time was actually a future blessing in disguise.
Perhaps you meet the love of your life and realise that person you thought you wanted wasn’t the one for you after all. Or maybe losing out on the job sets you on a new and unexpected path of professional growth, leading to opportunities that are fulfilling for both your soul and your bank account.
This card, like Chiron retrograde, is also a reminder that for growth to happen, we must turn inward and tend our wounds. It’s not always easy or fun — it can be tempting to fill our lives with work, relationships, family responsibilities, holidays, food, and all our earthly vices. But it’s essential to take the time to be with yourself, to allow yourself to be with your feelings and let them move through you — even if it’s just taking five minutes a day for some conscious breathing or self-healing techniques such as tapping.
Numerologically, this card is a seven, a number that signifies spiritual growth. You’ve passed through the integration phase of six and are ready to step into a new level of spiritual awareness and perceptivity. Seven represents a quest for knowledge and truth — you may find yourself questioning old beliefs or expanding your awareness to accommodate new perspectives. The number seven also speaks to the need to go deeper into your inner world, echoing the message of Chiron retrograde.
