Cancer New Moon energy update
Cancer is the ultimate feminine, the divine mother archetype. This Moon asks you how you can deeply nourish and nurture your mind, body and soul.
Hey Witches,
My favourite time of year has arrived. We’re now in the season of Litha on the pagan Wheel of the Year, and summer is in full swing here in Barcelona. Despite being a pagan festival, Litha is still celebrated across Europe under a variety of guises, from the Scandinavian midsummer festivals to San Juan here in Spain.
San Juan is traditionally celebrated with bonfires and fireworks (even as I write this, I can hear the party still going), mirroring the fiery power of the Sun that has reached its full potential in the northern hemisphere. But in many Celtic traditions, Litha is associated with the element of water. This association ties in astrologically, as the summer solstice marks the beginning of Cancer season.
Symbolised by the crab, Cancer is, of course, a water sign, representing both the depths of our emotions and a chance to reflect. The Sun is high in the sky, illuminating our darkness and helping us see our reflection more clearly, while the Moon is hiding in the shadows, biding her time.
This New Moon is also known as a Black Moon, as it’s the second New Moon to fall within a calendar month. Let’s take a look at what the energy has in store for us.
Cancer Black Moon energy update
The Cancer New Moon will fall on the 28th/29th of June, depending on where you are in the world, and it’s all about the feels. Cancer rules the home, family, emotions, motherhood, nurturing, water, sensitivity, intuition, and compassion. The Moon is at home in Cancer, making this lunation feel like a heartfelt — and slightly tearful — hug. It reminds me of when my mum used to pick me up at the airport and cry with happiness — that’s Cancer New Moon vibes.
This New Moon is all about coming home to yourself, feeling at home in your body. Radically accepting, honouring, loving, and even worshipping your body is a revolutionary act against patriarchal oppression.
The Cancer New Moon reminds you that you are the embodiment of the divine feminine. Even if you’re a man or don’t identify as a woman, you carry these energies within you. If you’re a man, this is a good time to decolonise your mind and open yourself to your feminine energies — another rebellious act against the patriarchy, which is harmful to men as well as people of other genders.
Cancer is the ultimate feminine, the divine mother archetype. This Moon asks you how you can deeply nourish and nurture your mind, body and soul.
The Cancer New Moon is also inviting us to embrace the darker aspects of femininity represented by Lilith. Lilith is the inner feminine rebel, the rule-breaker, the one who knows what she wants and goes for it, and who isn’t afraid to express or experience her sensuality and sexuality.
So under this Moon, we have the soft, nurturing, motherly feminine rising together with the dark feminine, asking us to integrate both parts of ourselves to become fully whole (again, this applies regardless of your gender identity. We all have both Cancer and Lilith in our charts).
It’s about revelling in the unique, beautiful, miraculous beauty of your body — no matter what size or shape it is. The Cancer New Moon invites us to lean into physical pleasures, whether that’s a sensual massage or an indulgent chocolate ice cream. It reminds us of what a gift it is to experience the world through these physical vehicles.
“The cure for anything is water: sweat, tears, or the sea,” so if you’re feeling extra sensitive around this time, head to the water for some healing. If the emotions coming up are predominantly rage and anger, sweat it out with an intense workout. Alternatively, let yourself have a good cry. If you can get to the sea, immerse yourself in it and call on Gaia to soothe your system. If not, try a bath or shower with Epsom salts.
Self-care is the name of the game under this Cancer New Moon, whatever that may look like for you. You are the goddess in physical form — treat yourself as such!
Card of the week
Every other week, I pull a card to provide guidance for subscribers of The Coven.
This week, I’m using my “Seasons of the Witch Beltane Oracle” (which I’m OBSESSED with), and the card I’ve pulled for you is “Maypole”:
This card feels like an invitation to celebrate. The New Moon comes shortly after the solstice, marking the halfway point in the year. It’s a perfect time to look back on and celebrate everything we’ve achieved so far.
We tend to get so caught up in pursuing goals that when we reach them, we move straight on to the next, barely taking a moment to recognize our achievements. This is a time to celebrate yourself — because if you don’t, who will?
This card is also encouraging us to keep working towards our goals, reminding us that we are powerful co-creators of our realities and everything we desire is in reach. This is a fertile time for planting dream seeds, so use this New Moon to set intentions and visualise what you want to manifest.
Magical workings can take on new meaning and additional power when done with others. Like last month’s Three of Cups, this card is about community. It’s encouraging us to find our tribe so that we can grow and manifest together.
Numerologically this card is a 6, representing growth and the integration of lessons from past challenges. You have overcome so many struggles and evolved through them. Now is the time to build on the foundations of those lessons and step forward into the new reality you wish to create for yourself.
